In ancient times, jewels, gold and other wealthy offerings were placed in tombs as a way to display wealth and status. Today, being buried with worldly symbols may not be so much about status as it is to create a connection between two worlds. Being buried with something treasured can give both the departed and the family a sense of comfort and mortal bonding. According to research performed by the British Charity Age Concern, requests to be buried with a personal item are ranging anywhere from the bizarre to the traditional. Some of the most common wishes are to be buried with pet’s ashes, buried naked “as they came into the world”, or buried with false teeth in place. Desires to be buried with favorite jewelry, a special book, or a treasured article of clothing are also very popular. Pre-planning guides will often have sections in them that let an individual state their request for burial rites, and this makes these decisions for the family much easier when the time comes. Even though many requests may seem extreme, perhaps it gives rise to thinking about what is important to each and every one of us. While we leave our mark on the world by leaving behind memories and legacies, perhaps many people are taking comfort in feeling that they can take a piece of this world with them into the afterlife.
